Telecom Italia wished to revamp its router, replacing the existing one with a design product. The devices realized till that moment were ‘black plastic boxes’, practical but totally inappropriate for the home environment. The client’s primary need was the possible offer of a pleasant object for the home. However, designing revealed some critical points: on the one hand the high industry competitiveness that imposed competitive production costs on us, on the other hand the need for developing an elegant shape while respecting electronics. Technical characteristics were specially conditioned by the need for ventilation deriving from the inside pcb overheating. The solution conceived is unprecedented: instead of classic aesthetically detrimental ventilation openings, we have created some air spaces that, in correspondence with the black outside frame, allows for an air exchange without perceiving empty spaces, hence avoiding ruining the design. A specific technical-stylistic combination was detected that granted a totally satisfying formal and aesthetical development: the long presence of the product on the market is clear evidence that is absolutely exceptional compared with the category average.
